Kai is an even tempered, sweet and patient mare who gets along with everyone. She is a mid-herd level mare making her life pretty easy with the other horses. Kai is a big girl, weighing about 1200lbs. Her heart is as large as her body and we fell in love straight away! Kai had been sold for slaughter by her owner before coming to BixRo. Kai has Navicular Syndrome which increases her care needs. We are working with a veterinarian near Kansas City to reduce her pain and give her quality of life. Donations help reduce the financial burden of this care.

Sheldon was a lanky boy with the most playful spirit we have experienced. He was low in the herd and easily pushed from his food and space, so we kept him away from the herd for feeding. Sheldon was sold to a kill buyer and on his way to Mexico for slaughter. He has had an incredibly traumatic history which showed in his frame, broken bones that healed without medical intervention. Sheldon was incredibly distrustful of people for about 3 years and, later, had his few chosen people. We are very grateful to our farrier and vet who helped Sheldon have a lovely quality of life to his last day.

Penny is a pony with an aloof manner who is mid-herd level, getting along with all the horses. Penny was a broodmare and, now a senior, lives her life grazing and enjoying her herd. In addition to routine physical care, we keep our eyes on Penny for possible injuries but, otherwise, we let her be; she has paid her dues!

Cookie was a one of a kind mare who touches the heart of every person lucky enough to meet her. We have few solo photos of Cookie because she was rarely alone. Cookie had her right eye removed due to untreated injury and she was typically close to Tex. Cookie loved people in spite of being betrayed by them. She especially loved kids and we could place a little human on her back and the joy felt was palpable. Cookie was friendly but cautious. She was second to last in herd hierarchy and we gave her extra protection during feed time to keep the top mares from stealing her food.
Cookie asked very little and gave more than can be imagined. To say she is missed is an understatement.

Frost has had a fabulous life! Frost's former owner had her from weanling (about 7 months) and sent her to BixRo several years ago to ensure Frost's future is one of happiness and safety. This selfless decision by her owner was the ultimate act of love! Frost's life long stall mate was Tex and, though they are not besties now, they still get along perfectly. Frost is a super easy mare and willing to do most anything asked of her. She is not terribly fond of being groomed but will tolerate it as needed for well being. She is easy with hoof trims, vaccines and dentals. Frost is a great horse for young kids to learn about horses and horsemanship. She enjoys time with people and, with that in mind, we welcome sharing her with supporters here at the Haven.

Tex is a stunning gelding with a bloodline of Quarter Horse royalty and training as a top tier Reining horse with stud potential. So rich is his lineage, training, and history that most riders are compelled to sample Tex's amazing skill set! It is this very dynamic, unfortunately, that places him at great risk down the road. Tex has had a good life and it is our intent that the remainder is fantastic, with his herd and free from exploitation and risk of a tragic end.

Valentina is the heart of BixRo Horse Haven. Circumstances graced us and Valentina when we met her in 2011. She was being sold to a notoriously cruel "dude ranch" to be a string trail horse for tourists. We offered to buy her, undercutting the dude ranch. Her story is robust and is how we learned about the slaughter pipeline. Without a doubt, Valentina's story is one of triumph which motivates us to provide unwanted, at risk for slaughter horses a forever home. Now retired, Valentina was a trustworthy bridle horse who was eager to go up, over, around or through anything the desert offered.

Lily was the surprise baby born on July 1, 2012 in Henderson, NV. When we bought Valentina, little did we know this little red spitfire growing inside her would change our world! Lily is curious. Lily is brave. She is reactive. She is athletic. Fast. FUN and FEISTY! Lily was born and will live her life with us. Lily is a daily reminder of what we owe to horses, ours and those belonging to people who neglect and/or abuse horses. Lily was humanely started and trained to be an athletic riding horse. Lily has replaced her mother, Valentina, as primary bridle horse.
