Ways to Help

This has been a tough decision for us but, ultimately, bringing two wild horses ripped from their herd and their range by the BLM is in line with our mission, vision and values.

The BLM's "Adoption Incentive Program" is responsible for adding thousands of horses into the horse slaughter pipeline every year.

BixRo will feed 180 pounds of hay daily in the winter months of October through May.  We feed only high quality, weed free horse hay. Hay is delivered from the field and stacked into the loft of our 120 year old cow barn. It's really fun to watch the process unfold! And, this loft is a fantastic spot to view horses, read a book, or just take a beat!

Our farrier, Ryan, trims hooves every 8 weeks in winter and every 6 in summer.  Kai requires a therapeutic trim to reduce Navicular discomfort.  Trims are $50 per horse. 

All horses have annual dental exams and, typically, a float. Unlike humans, horses teeth grow continually until they are lost due to age or injury, requiring ongoing dental care to file sharp edges and balance molars. 

BixRo needs another horse shelter! As a sustainable pasture property, we rotate pastures and have a sacrifice lot. This ensures we always have quality forage. Right now we have shelters on west pasture; we need two on the east pasture. 

All horses are fed Purina Equine Senior daily.  We use two bags a day and each bag is just under $30.  We deworm all horses four times a year and each dose is around $15 depending on the product rotation.  We have a standing inventory of pain medication, syringes, and wound treatment products to provide our horses immediate care when needed.

BixRo Horse Haven is 44 acres with fencing and cross fencing, loafing sheds, quarantine pen, multiple gates, a 120 year old barn with hay loft, a double garage for equipment and winter horse care.  All need maintenance, some upgrades, and equipment to keep quality high but spending in check. We are also adding another pasture which will increase grazing rotation for grass/soil conservation.
